FAA Announces New 2026 Drone Regulations
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has released its comprehensive update to drone regulations for 2026, bringing significant changes that affect both recreational and commercial drone operators.
Key Changes
- Remote ID Compliance: All drones over 250g must broadcast Remote ID signals. The FAA is expanding the requirement to include all drones operating within controlled airspace.
- BVLOS Operations: New waivers for Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations are now available for certified commercial operators, enabling longer-range inspection and delivery missions.
- Altitude Limits: The standard 400-foot altitude limit remains, but operators with Part 107 certification can apply for altitude waivers up to 800 feet for specific operations.
- Night Operations: Anti-collision lighting requirements have been standardized across all drone categories for night flying.
What This Means for Drone Pilots
Recreational pilots should ensure their drones are Remote ID compliant. Most modern drones already include this capability via firmware updates. Commercial operators should explore the new BVLOS waiver process, which has been streamlined for 2026.
The FAA expects these regulations to pave the way for expanded commercial drone services including package delivery, infrastructure inspection, and emergency response.
