FAA Greenlights First eVTOL Commercial Routes for 2026 Launch
Historic FAA Certification Clears Path for Urban Air Mobility
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted Part 135 air carrier certificates to both Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation, marking the first time electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have been authorized for commercial passenger operations in U.S. airspace. The dual certification, announced June 15, 2026, follows a 42-month review process and clears the way for revenue flights to begin as early as August 2026.
Three Launch Cities, 12 Initial Vertiports
Joby will launch in New York City and Los Angeles with six vertiports operational by September, while Archer targets Miami and Fort Lauderdale with four sites. Both companies have secured agreements with Reef Technology and Atlantic Aviation for ground infrastructure. Initial routes will connect Manhattan to Newark Airport (7 minutes vs. 60+ by car) and LAX to downtown LA (10 minutes vs. 45+).
"This isn't a demo anymore — it's a business," said Joby CEO JoeBen Bevirt at the Washington press conference. "We've completed 50,000+ test flight miles, 1,200+ transition flights, and carried FAA inspectors on 200+ evaluation sorties."
Pricing and Market Projections
Introductory fares are set at $195-$250 per seat — competitive with premium rideshare but 70% faster. Morgan Stanley projects the U.S. eVTOL market will reach $12 billion annually by 2030, with 15,000 aircraft in service globally. United Airlines has already placed $1.2 billion in orders across both manufacturers.
Regulatory Framework Sets Global Precedent
The FAA's new "Powered-Lift" category (14 CFR Part 21.17) establishes certification standards other nations are expected to adopt. EASA plans to harmonize rules by Q1 2027. Critically, the certification includes BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) operations in controlled airspace using NASA's UTM (UAS Traffic Management) corridor system — a first for civilian aviation.
Noise and Community Integration
Both aircraft operate at 45-55 dBA at 500 feet — quieter than a dishwasher. NYC's vertiport curfew (10 PM - 6 AM) and mandatory 300-foot altitude minimums over residential zones address community concerns raised during 18 months of public hearings.
What's Next
Archer's Midnight and Joby's S4 will begin crewed proving runs July 1. First paying passengers board August 15. Watch for Volocopter's Singapore launch (Q4 2026) and Lilium's Munich-Rome corridor (2027) as global urban air mobility accelerates.
