eVTOL Air Taxis Launch Commercial Operations in Three Major U.S. Cities
Commercial eVTOL Operations Take Flight in 2026
After years of testing and regulatory review, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have officially entered commercial passenger service across three major U.S. metropolitan areas. Joby Aviation launched its four-passenger S4 air taxi in New York City on March 15, followed by Archer Aviation's Midnight aircraft in Los Angeles on March 22, and Lilium's seven-seat Lilium Jet in Chicago on April 1.
FAA Part 135 Certification Clears Path to Revenue
All three operators secured FAA Part 135 air carrier certificates in late 2025, marking the first time eVTOL manufacturers have achieved full commercial certification for passenger-carrying operations. The milestone follows over 50,000 combined test flight hours and extensive noise certification campaigns meeting Stage 5 standards — 100 times quieter than conventional helicopters.
"This isn't a demo flight anymore," said FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker at the NYC launch event. "These are revenue flights with paying passengers, operated under the same safety framework as commercial airlines."
Routes, Pricing, and Early Demand
Initial routes connect downtown vertiports to major airports: Manhattan to JFK (7 minutes), downtown LA to LAX (12 minutes), and Chicago Loop to O'Hare (10 minutes). Introductory pricing ranges from $150-$250 per seat — competitive with premium rideshare but cutting 45-60 minutes off ground transit during peak hours.
Joby reported 87% load factors in its first two weeks, with over 12,000 bookings through its app and Delta Air Lines partnership channel. Archer's LA network saw 9,400 reservations in week one, while Lilium's Chicago routes reached 78% capacity.
Infrastructure and UTM Integration
The launches coincide with deployment of NASA's UTM (UAS Traffic Management) Level 4 corridor system, enabling automated deconfliction between eVTOLs, delivery drones, and traditional aircraft below 400 feet. Vertiport infrastructure includes 12 charging pads per site with 1 MW megawatt charging, enabling 10-minute turnaround times.
Market Impact and 2027 Outlook
Morgan Stanley estimates the urban air mobility market will reach $12 billion by 2028, up from $1.2 billion in 2025. Five additional operators — including Wisk, Vertical Aerospace, and Supernal — target Part 135 certification by Q3 2026, with Dallas, Miami, and San Francisco next in line for service.
"We're witnessing the birth of a new transportation layer," said SkyDrone Max analyst Sarah Chen. "The regulatory template is now proven. Scale and cost reduction follow."
